Broken Promises

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

I promised myself I would never pay to go into a Disney park ever again.
Cost too much, for not enough. I love roller coasters, but much of the Disney stuff is very dated.
I broke that promise today. But it was worth it. I was with my godson who is 5. Who laughed and giggled his way through the whole thing.
So I will go back, when my nephew is 5. But only for him.
Highlight of the day: Brad lost his camera. Went to lost and found to find out it had been returned. We have no idea who found the camera, but we know what they look like. They took a picture of themselves with the camera.
Very classy.

Remedial Cockroaches

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

I was up at 320a this morning. I had an early flight and wasn’t sure how long it would take to get from the new place to the airport.
My bags were in the living room after being packed the night before. For some reason my cloths for the day were in the living room as well. When I turned on the light, there were three cockroaches on the floor.
This is not a surprise for a city garden apartment. It’s not like they were rats. They were small and didn’t seem too concerned by my presents, meaning they didn’t scamper. Just kept to their business.
I was under the impression that normal cockroach was to scamper.
As I was taking out the garbage before loading the car, I managed to kill one of them. Not because I was trying, but because it just ended up under my foot.
They can survive radiation, but no my miss step.

Disconnected

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

I am in my new space. Mostly settled (which was made much easier by the fact that I don’t own any furniture).
I feel like a city dweller again. I think for the last 4 years I have been in denile. I said I lived in the city. My address was in the city, but I had to drive most places. That is not city living.
I have food (over 20 places), coffee (over 5 places), bank, and mail all with in walking distance.
I am just off a college campus, and it has been great just walking from here to there through campus. The energy is great.
The one thing I don’t have in the new place is internet.
Well most of the time I don’t have it. From time to time a stray wireless network pops up. I still don’t know how I feel about sharing someone else’s network with out their permission. I have heard the New York Times resident ethicist talk about the issue. He is one the side of say it is okey. As someone who has a pension to borrow, I didn’t find his argument persuasive.
For the most part I am off line. I only see the wed once or twice a day. Requires me to plan a little more.
I now have a list of all the things I need to do on-line when I have access.
I also can’t waste great deals of time on-line.
I think this is going to be a good thing.
But I am a little scared I won’t survive.

My Space

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

The last week has been hectic. Ended up driving to Western NY for work because flights we canceled and yesterday and today I have been moving.
For the first time in close to 6 years, I can say that I have “my own space”.
I found out a few weeks ago that the house I was living in was going to be sold as everyone moved to LA, so the scramble was on.
I found a dingy one bedroom garden apt. right off of John Hopkins’ main campus.
I am excited by:
* having my own kitchen
* being able to walk to food, coffee, a back, and a post office
* getting settled
* getting some sleep.
For some reason I was up at 3am this morning, so I did what any rational person would do…I loaded up my car with the next load of boxes, went to Laundromat and unloaded stuff. By 9 am this morning I had eaten breakfast, done laundry, read the news paper and run two loads of stuff to the new place.
Off to get basics (tp, eggs, milk, soap, dish detergent, a frying pan).

Why I Want To Be Rich

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007
British billionaire Richard Branson revealed on Friday that he is offering $25 million to anyone who can create a technology that will clean out greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
The news conference had Branson flanked by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and British ex-diplomat Crispin Tickell. The goal of the prize is to tackle one of man’s greatest issues – global warming – by spurring development of new technology.
“Man created the problem and therefore man should solve the problem,” Branson said of greenhouse gases at a news conference.

Mind

“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.”

Gnarls Barkley.
Brilliant.
Beautiful.
One more reason to love art.
[NOTE: I consider myself a culturally aware child of the eights. I am supposed to say the best moment/performance of the evening was The Police. My love of ridicules pop music is even more powerful then my self-conscious desire to look/be hip and cool. My favorite moment of the night? No question, Shakira.]

Free Market Medicine

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

There was a point in Chinese history when you paid the doctor when you were healthy. The moment you got sick you stop paying. If the local doctor wanted to get paid, it was his job to bring you back to full health.
Interesting idea.
I am huge fan of the free market and I believe the free market is the best tool in most cases to solve social problems. I believe this is true with heath, healing, and the heath care system.
The problem is we don’t have a health care system. We have created a disease treatment system. In most cases, a medical provider gets paid when he/she provides a treatment to fix something that is wrong. There is little incentive in free market to insure health.
In Gary Craig’s words, “We are on the ground floor of healing.” I believe a shift is afoot. More and more self-maintenance techniques are being taught and used. People are asking questions about the foods they eat and the drugs they put in their body.
As a culture we already know how to do self-maintenance. How many times this week did you brush your teeth. A simple task done a few times a day to insure dental health.
Look for ways to stay in good health. Demand them in the market place. If you do, the market place will respond.

Saddened

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

While waking to baggage claim Monday I was having a typical travel conversation with my seatmate.
“Business or Pleasure?” “Visit Baltimore much?” “What do you do for a living?”
He shared his life as a volunteer in youth ministry with his kids who are all now grown. How his kids went to Young Life camp as kids and are now counselors.
By the time we got to baggage claim he said, “I it is good to hear they are doing youth ministry in the Catholic Church.” He then told me a story.

25 years ago we moved from New Orleans to Houston. After about a year my daughter was born. I went to the church to see what I needed to do to get her baptized.
The pastor asked if we were members of the church.
I told him I didn’t know. We have come every week for the last year.
The pastor said, “Why do we get you a set of envelops and see how the next few months go and then we can baptize your daughter.
I walked out the door to never come back.

That made me sad. It was good to hear that he did find a home, a place his family was fed, but his family (and my family) told him he wasn’t welcome.
It points to how hard any big organization is. All members speak for the whole. If one makes poor choices it effects all.
